Root Canal Overview
Root canal therapy is a round of treatments for an infected tooth. It treats the dental pulp, which consists of the tooth’s root, nerve tissue, blood vessels and cellular entities. Endodontic therapy removes the dental pulp and decontaminates the hollow to remove the infection and protect the tooth from future contamination. Dental pulp can get infected for many reasons, including deep decay, repeated dental procedures, faulty crowns, cracks or chips. If left untreated, it can lead to a variety of other problems such as an abscess. Plano, TX cosmetic dentists, Dr. Ron Bosher and Dr. Tim Nguyen, are extremely gentle when performing root canal therapy, and ensures that his patients are comfortable throughout the procedure.
Crowns After Root Canal
Root canal therapy involves the removal of the infected pulp, which can weaken the tooth. Therefore, the dentist will typically suggest the placement of a crown on a tooth that has undergone root canal therapy to give it support and protect it from further damage. The patient will be fitted with a temporary crown while the new crown is being made. It typically takes about 1-3 weeks for this crown to be made. The final placement is made during an in-office appointment.
Root Canal Reviews
"My experience with Dr. Bosher and his magnificent staff was splendid. I took Dr. Bosher through the performance of a root canal and he proved to be an excellent student. I definitely will return to his office in the future and will refer?"- C. / Citysearch / Jan 27, 2014
"Having been referred by my Dad who has been a patient for many years, I went in for a cleaning after several years without having a dentist. The hygienist was excellent, taking time to make sure I was comfortable throughout the appointment, and she was very thorough. At the end of the appointment, both Dr. Bosher and Dr. Nguyen came in to discuss my x-rays and inform me of a tooth that possibly needed a root canal. They were both very personable, answered all my questions, and made sure I was scheduled for the very next morning to take care of that tooth. The next morning, Dr. Nguyen explained everything he planned to do and drew a diagram of the process. He and his assistant made me as comfortable as possible, frequently asked if I was doing okay, and explained each step throughout the procedure, which fortunately was a crown rather than a root canal. Having always been afraid to go to the dentist, this experience was very, very different! I'm happy to have found Dr. Bosher and Dr. Nguyen. Everyone in the office is wonderful!"- P.P. / Demandforce / Jul 12, 2016
"Dr. Bosher is simply the best of the best! There is not enough room here to list the incredible things he has done for my family. When my small child had defective enamel and another dentist doubted his six-year molars could even be saved, Dr. Bosher implemented a "temporary" solution that has held for over seven years, and is likely to last until the teeth are old enough to be crowned. The same child was misdiagnosed by an orthodontist. Dr. Bosher procured us a second opinion that saved him years of painful, expensive, and unnecessary treatment. Another child broke a tooth in an accident and was told a crown was its only hope. Dr. Bosher saved the tooth with a difficult filling that other dentists would not attempt. And he has provided excellent care for me through several crowns, root canals, and other major dental work. His techology is state of the art, his knowledge is cutting edge, his staff are friendly and compassionate, and his technique is brilliant. As long as he is in practice, I will never go anywhere else."- C.S. / Citysearch / Nov 19, 2013

"After several years without a dentist I did an online search and read reviews and chose Dr. Nguyen. I am very happy I made this choice and I will be gladly staying with Dr. Nguyen. Great experience from start to finish with setting appointment to exam, X-ray, referral to Endodontic for root canal, then back to Dr. Nguyen to finish up with the crown. Everyone in this office is super nice. I am very happy I made this choice."- G.L. / Demandforce / Oct 22, 2019
What to Expect with Root Canal
During root canal therapy, the infected dental pulp is removed and the inside of the tooth is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. Then, the tooth is filled with a rubber-like natural polymer, called gutta-percha, to strengthen the weakened tooth. After the tooth has been filled, the dentist will place a temporary crown over the tooth to protect it. After completing root canal therapy, patients are able to chew efficiently, bite normally and protect other teeth from excessive strain while maintaining a healthy, beautiful smile.
Pubic Lift Estimated Cost
Root canal therapy has two costs associated with it. The first cost is for the root canal itself, which can usually run between $800-$1,200. This cost could increase depending on how many canals within the tooth are being treated. The crown will add an additional fee and this typically runs around $1,000-$1,500. Both root canals and dental crowns are typically covered (at least partially) by dental insurance. We will work with our patients to understand the exact coverage and discuss payment and treatment options during the treatment consultation.

Root Canal Therapy FAQs
Does It Hurt?
For years, individuals have had a negative feeling regarding root canals, the process and the pain associated with one. The root canal itself does not hurt, thanks to advanced numbing medication and nitrous oxide to help relax the patient. The pain most patients feel is in the tooth itself prior to treatment. The infection, especially if a tooth has abscessed can be very painful. Root canal treatment treats the infected tooth and results in a tooth that no longer suffers from infection and pain. We can discuss the various treatment pain reliever options during the consultation.
Why Do I Need It?
Patients with an infected tooth should undergo root canal therapy to prevent the infection from spreading. In addition, a root canal helps ensure that the tooth is not lost (meaning, an extraction is not necessary). Patients with an infected tooth might have symptoms like lingering sensitivity to hot and cold, discomfort when chewing or biting and severe pain.
One advantage of root canal therapy is the patient being able to keep their tooth. Extracting the tooth means replacing it with an artificial tooth; however, artificial teeth are not as strong as natural teeth. Tooth extraction can also lead to a series of dental problems, such as drifting teeth, bite problems and TMJ discomfort.
